Running head: CASTLE FAMILY RESTAURANT BUSINESS

Castle’s Family Restaurant Business Plan: Stage I

HRM 340

Devry University

BUSINESS ASSESSMENT The Castle Family restaurant is located in Northern California. They currently have eight restaurants; only 40% of the employees are full time, with approximately 340 employees. In most traditional restaurants the food service managers are generally responsible for the daily operations of the restaurant. The managers are generally responsible for all administrative and human-resource functions of the business, including recruiting new employees and monitoring employee performance and training (Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2009). The Castle Family restaurant is currently being operated by one individual. There is no set standard for operating the business, and everything seems to be done on location.

IDENTIFIED PROBLEMS.

The following are some of the problems that I found that need to be addressed. * Jay Morgan is both the operations manager, and HR manager for all eight restaurants. * 60% of the employees are part time employees * Payroll is processed using an Excel spreadsheet with an automated computer application. I will concentrate on the need for a Database Management System (DBMS). I feel that by utilizing a database management system it will alleviate all of the unnecessary traveling that Mr. Morgan currently does. Mr. Morgan is in charge of all of the day to day business, as well as the payroll, and recruiting for the company and all of its stores. The main functions of a DBMS are to create the database, insert, read, update, and delete database data, maintain data integrity (i.e., making sure that the data are correct) and security (i.e., making sure that only the right people have access to the data), and prevent data from being lost by providing backup and recovery capabilities (Thite, 2009). DBMS can help eliminate the need for traveling to each individual
